Monroeville Rosenwald School
Monroe County
The Monroeville Rosenwald School was built in 1927 to provide educational opportunities for Black children in the community. The one-room school, built by the Freedman's Bureau, offered first through sixth grades. Funds to build the school were provided by the Black community, the Monroe County Board of Education, and a grant from the Rosenwald Foundation, founded by Sears, Roebuck and Company C.E.O. Julius Rosenwald. Former slave Booker T. Washington, President of Tuskegee Institute, inspired Rosenwald to help improve education for Black students in the South. Rosenwald helped fund more than 5,300 schools across the South with the majority in rural areas and nearly 400 in Alabama. The Monroeville Rosenwald School was one of several in Monroe County. The school building serves today as the Monroe County Board of Education.
