1. The County of Dufferin Marker
The County of Dufferin was created out of portions of Grey, Simcoe and Wellington counties in 1881.
The newly-formed county was named after the Lord of Dufferin (Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood), who served as the third Govenor General of Canada (1872-1878).
The Blackwood family held title over lands in County Down, Northern Ireland, which came to be called the Barony of Dufferin (highlighted on map). Since the majority of settlers to Dufferin County were of Northern Irish heritage, the name was a favourable choice.
During his tenure as Governor General, Lord Dufferin and his family resided in Canada. Lord Dufferin took an active interest in the advancement of education, the arts, travel, sports and recreation. His support for Canada's progress, in a period of rapid change, garnered him a distinguished reputation, which inspired naming the County in his honour.
