Inscription.
Born in Portsmouth, attended Norfolk Academy, four sport star at N.C. State. Began career at Elizabeth City in 1911, at Portsmouth in 1912. Lifetime .287 average in 9 year Major League career starting in 1914 with N.Y. Giants. Immortal John McGraw fined him for hitting homerun when given bunt sign. Led N.L. in homers 1916-17 a total of 11 hits, at least one in each game of 6-game 1917 World Series, is a record which stood for 36 years. Player-Manager of Norfolk Tars 1924-27.

Tidewater Baseball Shrine recognizes players and executives who have significantly contributed to the game of baseball in the Tidewater area of Virginia.
The shrine is located at Harbor Park, which is home to the Norfolk Tides, a AAA minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.The Norfolk Tides annually induct new members into the shrine.
