1. Historic Peterborough Marker
The area has been settled for centuries. 3,500 years ago, Bronze Age inhabitants built a causeway across the marshes at Flag Fen to the east of the city. The Romans built a fort at Longthorpe and a town near Water Newton.
The modern city centre was established with the foundation of an abbey on the site of Peterborough Cathedral in 655AD. During the 12th century the monks laid out the street plan we still have today.
The town expanded rapidly with the coming of the railways in 1845, then again when Peterborough was given new town status in 1968.
