1. Volcano's Schools Marker

Inscription.
An act to provide Free Schools for the town of Volcano was passed by the West Virginia Legislature on February 18th, 1871. The first students were taught in the old Volcano Hotel. By August, a two-story school accommodating 150 students was completed. Another building was under way at Sand Hill, which could accommodate 50 students.

When this building burned, it was replaced by a one-story, one-room building.

These attractive young ladies posed for a picture near Twin Lick School. Oil was part of everyday life as evidenced by the oil derrick behind the school.

Teacher's School Room Responsibilities
To keep the school room neat and clean, teachers were responsible for:
• Cleaning the floor and blackboards at least once a day.
• Scrubbing the floor, with hot, soapy water, at least once a week.
• Starting the fire at 7 am
