1. The Ocean House Hotel Marker

The Ocean House Hotel. . As a mariner, Captain William Babb, realizing the need for good accommodation for passengers arriving by water and waiting to catch the stagecoach for points east, decided to build a grand, two-storey hotel near the sulphurous Mineral Springs. It was widely advertised that mineral baths were available, and people came from far and wide for this special medicinal bath that "would heal almost anything". Babb also operated a bathing house on the main beach in the early 1900s, as a convenience for his hotel guests. Business prospered for a few years but as the railway transportation system became more prevalent, business declined, especially with the CPR apening a line in 1907. As well, fewer passengers were travelling on the lake boats., Captain Babb also formed a life saving brigade as an attempt to provide shoreline rescue for vessels in distress, and was recognized for this outstanding service to humanity. The hotel eventually closed and was torn down in the 1920s. ,
