La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, popularly known as Forty and Eight, is a fun and honor society of all war veterans. It draws its origin from the First World War when young Americans were sent to France to fight in the war to end all wars. The narrow gauge railroads of France had boxcars called Voitures that carried only half the capacity of American boxcars and these were used to transport the men and horses to and from the fighting fronts. The capacity of these small French boxcars was stenciled on the sides: "Quarante Hommes," 40 men, or "Huet Chevaux," 8 horses.
