The district is comprised of five blocks of the downtown business district of Hastings, including 35 commercial buildings constructed during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The majority of buildings are two stories in heightand constructed of local brick and stone. The front facades of the buildings contain architectural features characteristic of the Italianate style. The Hastings East Second Street Commercial Historic District is significant primarily for the relatively unaltered condition of its commercial buildings and secondarily as a retail area that has served the needs of the community since the mid-19th century.Photographed by Cosmos Mariner, September 4, 20222. 214 & 216 East 2nd Street MarkerThe marker is mounted near ground level under the storefront window on the east (left) side of the center (second floor) entrance.214 & 216 East 2nd Street: two storeys, brick, field stone foundation, flat roof, window lintels, cornice.

Excerpt: The East Second Street Commercial Historic District in Hastings, Minnesota, is a downtown district consisting of thirty-five commercial buildings built between 1860 and 1900. The downtown area retained its historic integrity even as other communities modernized their downtowns as a result of post-World War II urban renewal efforts. The district contains a number of two- and three-story buildings, each in a unique style. The storefronts include large display windows with a main entrance flanked by cast iron or wooden columns.
