1. Cabin Foundations Marker

Cabin Foundations. Patrick Henry's Red Hill. These two cabin foundations are what remains of structures used as housing for the enslaved population and later sharecroppers after 1865. A photograph of these cabins from a 1945 edition of "The Iron Worker" served as the basis for the Quarter Place reconstructed cabin that sits at the entrance of the trail. Archaeological evidence indicates that there was a chimney on the eastern cabin but no source of heat in the western cabin. This means that the eastern cabin was originally intended to be a dwelling while the western cabin was a work or storage shed., These cabins were constructed using logs and sawn lumber for the door and window frames. The nails that were found around the structure were machine-cut, which dates them to John Henry's ownership of the property in the mid-19th century. These two cabins were dismantled sometime in the 1950s after they were no longer used.
