1. Blowing in the Wind Marker
Many species of the perennial plant, Anemone, grow in a range of colors. The white and pink shades depicted in the drawing room ceiling were garden favorites in the late 19th Century, when they were associated with excitement and anticipation. The ancient flower is mentioned in Ovid's Metamorphoses when Venus transforms the blood of her dead lover, Adonis, into an Anemone, whose petals were lost in the wind. The flower is sometimes called the wind flower, as the petals are often scattered by the wind. Thriving in partial shade, the Anemone is easily raised from seed.
