Regarding Carlton Fisk. During his first 11 seasons in the majors as a member of the Boston Red Sox, Carlton "Pudge" Fisk wore the number 27 (which was subsequently retired by that franchise in 2000). However, when Fisk signed with the White Sox before the 1980 season, 27 was already taken, so Fisk inverted the number and took 72, which he said was also a nod to his breakout 1972 season, when he made his first All-Star team, was selected the American League's Rookie of the Year and finished fourth in MVP voting. Fisk wore 72 for the rest of his career, which ended at age 45 in June 1993. Fisk was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
