John Brown (1816-1896)
The steel industry giant was born and worked in Orchard Square. At his famous Atlas Works on Savile Street he invented the conical railway buffer, pioneered steel rails, armour plate and the Bessemer steel making process. He also established the famous John Brown shipyard on Clydeside.
