1. The Elliot Block Marker

Inscription. In July 1890, John Elliot, a mill builder from Chesley, purchased this lot in a section of Queen Street North Burned out by the fire of 1889 and constructed this handsome building. In 1902, Elliot sold it to James Steele and the metal plaque near the top of this building was changed to read Steele Block. Steele was a blacksmith by trade and a prominent citizen in the village, having held such titles as assessor, councillor and reeve. This block has housed many businesses, including Donald McKenzie's printing press, the Paisley Advocate, a butcher shop, a photography studio, a jewelry store, a men’s store and a radio repair shop. The restoration of the facade in 1993 signified the return of this building to commercial significance in the village.
