1. Le Grand Hôtel d’Argouges / Grand Hôtel d’Argouges Marker
La grand'rue actuelle est depuis l'époque gallo-romaine l'axe principal de la cité. Au Moyen Age, on dénombrait sur son tracé à l'intérieur de l'enceinte trois églises paroissiales accompagnées de leur cimetière (Saint-André, Saint-Malo et Saint-Martin). Si ces édifices ont aujourd'hui disparu, nombre de demeures médiévales sont encore préservées.
Il en va ainsi du grand hotel d'Argouges construit au sortir de la Guerre de Cent Ans dans la seconde moitié du XVᵉ siècle. Cette époque est marquée par une évolution décisive au niveau architectural, la pierre l'emportant progressivement sur le bois. Dans ce contexte, cet édifice présente un double intérêt, tout d'abord par sa structure à pans de bois sur rue et en pierre sur cour, ensuite par son cycle décoratif à thématique religieuse.
La demeure appartenait à la famille d'Argouges, célèbre dans la région car plusieurs de ses membres se sont illustrés de manière parfois héroïque dans l'histoire de Bayeux et du Bessin depuis le XIᵉ siècle. Elle possédait d'autres propriétés dans la ville, tel l'hôtel d'Argouges-Gratot (n°60-62 rue St Malo), ou encore, dans les environs immédiats, le manoir d'Argouges à Vaux-sur-Aure où se situait le fief familial.
Jacques, seigneur d'Argouges et panetier du roi, a l'honneur d'accueillir en 1532 dans son hôtel de Bayeux le roi François Iᵉʳ accompagné de son fils (le futur Henri II) et de la cour.
Suite à ce passage royal, les propriétaires de la maison voisine au n°6, toute en pierre de taille, reçurent au milieu du XVIᵉ siècle l'autorisation d'orner leur façade de fleurs de lys et d'hermines. Les traces en forme de losange encore aujourd'hui visibles sur la façade en sont les ultimes vestiges.

This is the case for the Grand Hôtel d'Argouges, built in the second half of the 15th century. This building presents two interesting features. Firstly, its gabled timber frames on the street side in contrast with its stone construction on the courtyard side, and then its decorative pattern with its religious theme.
The house used to belong to the Argouges family, a well-known local family, as several members are renowned for their heroic acts in the history of Bayeux and the Bessin region since the 11th century. The family owned other properties: the Hôtel d'Argouges-Gratot (n°60-62 Rue St Malo), as well as the Manoir d'Argouges at Vaux-sur-Aure.
In 1532, Jacques, Lord of Argouges, had the honour of welcoming King François I to his residence in Bayeux. Further to this royal visit, the owners of the neighbouring house, at n°6, built entirely of dressed stone, received permission to sculpt the royal insignia on their facade: the Fleur de Lys. The diamond-shaped marks, visible on the facade, are the last remains of the insignia.
