1. Ziebold Building Marker
Construction on this piece of property dates back to 1840, when Richmond D. Durfee became the first permanent merchant in Red Bud. He built a frame building here, which was succeeded by a general store that was organized and operated by Mathias Huth, Fred Penningroth, and Charles Schrieber until 1872, when the firm dissolved. It was later known as the Mudd and McQuillan Mercantile. It was destroyed by fire in 1894.
In 1895, the current Ziebold Building was erected on the site by Gottlieb Ziebold for Red Bud Trust and Savings Company. Later, the bank became First National Bank, and in 1962, it relocated to 129 West Market Street. North County Savings Bank occupied the building from 1973 to 1987.
In 1993, Kenneth and Joan Voges purchased the building and took on the task of restoring it. Ken and others researched old documents and pictures in an attempt to restore one of Red Bud's historical centerpieces to its original beauty. The endeavor was completed successfully.
The Material Works, Ltd. has occupied the first and second floors since 1995.
