Stanley Burke's - Corky's Restaurant
Preservation of a Googie Landmark
In 1958, Stanley Burke's Coffee Shop opened its doors along Van Nuys Boulevard, becoming a gathering place where neighbors shared stories over coffee and food. Today, through Chick-fil-A's partnership with local historic preservation experts, this beloved landmark reopens its doors to welcome the community while preserving the memories rooted in its distinctive Googie architecture.
Chick-fil-A recognized that this wasn't just a building - it was a repository of San Fernando Valley stories and dreams. When the opportunity arose to restore Stanley Burke's, designated Historic-Cultural Monument #1215 in 2020 by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission, Chick-fil-A embraced the responsibility of safeguarding these community memories for future generations.
Working from original architectural drawings and photographs, the restoration team meticulously preserved the building's Space Age optimism. The iconic curving catenary roofline, distinctive "spiderleg" exterior roof supports, Palos Verdes stone, and expansive glass storefront windows were all restored or recreated to showcase the forward-thinking spirit that defined mid-century Los Angeles.
Inside, every detail tells a story. Portions of the original terrazzo floors, cantilevered counter stool seating, and "zig-zag" banquette seating transport guests back to an era when the future seemed limitless.
The clerestory skylight window, hidden for decades by a dropped ceiling, once again bathes the space in golden California light. Custom lighting fixtures that were restored include the original vertical light sconces, exterior 'S' sconces, and the freestanding neon sign - beacons for the car culture that glittered on the boulevard where Valley residents' cruised.
Perhaps most remarkable are the original decorative kitchen tiles discovered during restoration, now carefully showcased in the drawers below. These remnants honor the vision of Helen Fong, whose groundbreaking interior designs brought warmth and whimsy to Googie spaces. Her carefully studied use of contrasting colors and materials - red, blue, wood, glass, and concrete block - continues to create joy in this restaurant today.
For Chick-fil-A, this restoration project represents more
than
architectural preservation - it's about honoring the stories that
bind communities together. By breathing new life into Stanley
Burke's Coffee Shop, Chick-fil-A ensures that this landmark
continues to serve as both a gathering place for neighbors and
a bridge connecting past and present. Here, as guests gather
over Chick-fil-A's original chicken sandwiches, new memories
are created while celebrating the vision and creativity of the
communities that shaped Los Angeles into the vibrant city it is today.
