Sitka in Sitka Borough, Alaska — Northwest (North America)
Random House
a.k.a. Sitka Music Store
| | Historic Sitka Alaska | |
Clarence and Hopewell Rands along with their 3 daughters: Althea, Margaret and Barbara arrived in Sitka via Corvallis, Oregon in 1938 with the entrepreneur pioneer can-do spirit.
Clarence was employed with Columbia Lumber Company that would lead him into a career of building and construction. The growing community of Sitka was always in need of "something" and Hopewell's name became synonymous fulfilling those needs.
The vacant lot, located at 203 Lincoln Street, was developed in 1940 by Clarence and became a perfect store front for Hopewell to apply her various talents. From Sitka Music and Electric, to Rand's Music Store, a competition to give the store a new name, everyone came to know it as the "Random House."
Residents knew they could find books, furniture, souvenirs, jewelry, toys, bicycle rental and of course music supplies. The Rands family would sell their interest to Jack and Dorothy Parrish in 1962.
Thank you to Chuck and Shannon Trierschield, who purchased the property in 2007, for letting the Rands-Hames families share some of our favorite memories with this historic time capsule for Sitka. We are confident you will love Sitka just as much as we do.
Erected 2013.
