Inscription.
Longline fishermen have sustainably harvested halibut, rockfish and sablefish off Alaska's coast for more than 100 years. Every year, scientists and managers determine an acceptable level of harvest for each species, and limit the catch to ensure future abundance. Longliners catch fish on baited hooks that are attached to a groundline, anchored to the bottom, and left to "soak" for four to twelve hours. When the gear is hauled, each fish is cleaned, rinsed, and packed in ice or refrigerated sea water. Longliners deliver their catch to local seafood plants for further processing and distribution to quality conscious markets world-wide.
