Regarding Harold Washington. Harold Washington was born and raised in this South Side neighborhood, and attended DuSable High School a couple of miles away. He was elected as the city's 42nd mayor — and its first African American leader — in 1983. He was re-elected for a second term in 1987, but died about 7 months later at the age of 55 of a heart attack.
