Bible societies were established in various European countries at the timethe first being the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) in England in 1804. The BFBS aimed to promote the distribution of the Bible worldwide. However, it was only after the fall of Napoleon that this became possible in the Netherlands and Flanders as well. Local Bible societies sprang up across the country, and from 1815 onwards, they collaborated within a single Dutch Bible Society. From 1815, the board of the Dutch Bible Society also assumed responsibility for Bible-related work in what was then known as the Southern Netherlands; from that point on, the local societies were designated as branches.(Submitted on August 17, 2026.)
