A Designated Purple Heart City

Inscription.
In September 2017, the City of Frisco was designated a Purple Heart City by the Military Order of the Purple Heart organization. It is an expression of gratitude to the men and women in Frisco who were awarded the Purple Heart combat decoration. We honor their selfless sacrifice and service defending the freedoms all Americans enjoy today. It is our nation’s oldest military combat merit award.

General George Washington created a military award in August 1782 that would be the predecessor for the Purple Heart. Washington’s award was called the “Badge of Military Merit.” It was a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk with binding and the word “Merit” stitched across it. The award was specifically intended for soldiers in the lower ranks who had performed “any singularly meritorious action.”

Over time the award was forgotten. General Douglas MacArthur reinstated the award in 1932, honoring Washington’s 200th birthday. The revived medal has the shape of a rich purple heart bordered with gold, with a bust of Washington, along with his coat-of-arms.
