St. Patrick Parish
| — | Middlesex Heritage Trail | — |
St. Patrick Parish was established in 1855 by Rev. M. Power of the Diocese of Toronto and is currently in the Diocese of London. The initial congregation consisted of 25 families who were predominately Irish settlers. The initial church was a frame structure and in 1859 the current brick structure was erected. The church is reported to have been at least partially modeled after St. Lawrence the Martyr, London's first brick church, situated on the grounds of the present St. Peter Basilica. In 1982, St. Patrick Church underwent significant renovations and a new Chapel was added to the west side. Also in 1982, the building received historical designation by the Ontario Heritage Foundation.
The renovated church was re-dedicated on June 16, 1985, by Bishop John Sherlock of the Diocese of London. The rectory was built in 1869 and an extensive renovation was completed in 1993. The bell of St. Patrick Church was blessed by Bishop Pinsonneault of Sandwich. The inscription reads "Erected by Rt. Rev. Dr. Pinsonneault, Bishop of Sandwich, October 4, 1863, Rev. James Murphy, Pastor." Because the Diocesan title and centre was transferred back to London in 1867, this reference to the Diocese of Sandwich is probably unique as an historical reminder that the Diocesan seat was located in Sandwich from 1857 1867.
Erected by Middlesex County. (Marker Number 4.)
