Inscription. The property on which St. George's-on-the-Wye Anglican Church sits was originally deeded to Henry Oliver in 1824 by the Crown. The first Anglican Mission was established in 1856 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Logan. From 1858 until the church was constructed, services were held in the Grand Trunk Railway freight sheds and in the old school house. A meeting was organized in November 1860, to discuss the construction of a Church of England in the village. One year following the meeting, John McGurk, who purchased the property from Oliver in 1847, donated one-fifth of an acre to the Church Society. In January 1862, St. George's Church opened its doors.

The church was originally heated by box stove, which gave way to a coal-fired furnace located in a pit beneath the church. Run-off from the spring would frequently flood and extinguish the fire. To rectify the problem, in 1918 the roof and floor were raised to create a basement.

During the first fifty years, the Church was lit by coal-oil lamps. A gas system followed and was used until hydro was brought to Thorndale in 1914. Many improvements were made to the building

over the years. The current church pews were installed in 1905, the stables were converted into a church hall in 1948, and a new narthex was constructed at the front of the church in 1986. The beautiful stained-glass that adorns the church is dedicated in memory of past members.

In 2001, on it's 140th anniversary, St. George's-on-the-Wye Anglican Church hosted special guest Rev. Kathy (Jones) Morgan, who is the great, great, great, great granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Logan.
