Discours du général de Gaulle à Bayeux

General de Gaulle’s Speech in Bayeux
Inscription.

14 juin 1944
At this place, on June 14, 1944, before the inhabitants of Bayeux, proud of their liberation, Charles de Gaulle, protector of the homeland, spoke his first words on the liberated soil of France.
We are all deeply moved to find ourselves together in one of the first liberated cities of metropolitan France. But this is not the time to speak of emotion. What the country expects of you behind the front is that you continue the fight today, just as you have never ceased fighting since the beginning of this war and since June 1940. This cry, now as always, is a battle cry, because the path of combat is also the path of liberty and the path of honor.
This is the voice of the mother country. We shall continue the war with our land, sea and air forces, as we are doing today in Italy, where our soldiers have covered themselves in glory, just as they will tomorrow in metropolitan France. Our Empire, united entirely around us, is providing enormous assistance. We shall fight for France with passion, but also with reason.
You who have lived under the enemy’s heel and have belonged to Resistance groups know what this war is. It is an especially difficult war—this underground war, this war without weapons. I promise you that we shall continue the war until the sovereignty of every inch of French territory has been restored. No one will prevent us from doing so.
We shall fight
beside the Allies, with the Allies, as an ally, and the victory we achieve will be the victory of liberty and the victory of France.
I am going to ask you to sing our national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” with me.
