1. Monument Names

Twenty years ago, I was elected President of the Washington State Society U.S. Daughters of 1812. The challenge from the National Society at that time was to create a project to commemorate the upcoming Bicentennial of the War of 1812 in 2012. Since there were no battle sites in WA for that war, we decided to honor veterans of the War of 1812 who died in what was then Washington Territory.

There was no list of these veterans and we only knew of maybe 3 at the time. So along with Marilyn and Homer Morrison,

we began researching for more. By 2012 we had 16 known veterans and decided to have them listed on a common marker. Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery gave us a plot on which to erect our monument in their veterans section of the cemetery right below the bell tower . The monument was created by Quiring Monuments with room for 18 names. After dedicating 16 names in 2012, a 17th name was added in 2025 and then finally in 2026 the 18th name was etched in it. On August 14, 2026, we held a small dedication ceremony honoring the 18th name and completion of our monument project. If additional veterans are found in the future, they will be added to the narrative about the monument on the Washelli website. Members of the WA State Society U.S.D. 1812, Elizabeth Ellington DAR Chapter, and descendants and members of the family of Jamison/Jemison Hamilton, the 18th name on the monument, attended the ceremony. Laura Doefler, Veterans Rep, at Washelli Cemetery brought greetings.
