For more than 50 years, Italian-born design team Massimo and Lella Vignelli collaborated on iconic, elegant, and minimalist projects, including the graphics, interior, furnishings, and liturgical objects for St. Peters Church (1977), an eloquent demonstration of their philosophy Design is One. Married in 1957, they established the Lella and Massimo Vignelli office of Design and Architecture, Milan (1960), designing office accessories, home products, graphics, and furniture; clients included Pirelli and Olivetti. Upon moving to the U.S., they specialized in graphics for major corporations, cofounding Unimark International (1965) with six other designers. In 1971, they established Vignelli Associated and worked together until Massimos death. The Vignellis (sic) wide-ranging design projects included furniture, tableware, jewelry, watches, clothing, the 1972 NYC Subway Map, and three HLPC-commissioned signage programs: cultural medallions, Historic District Maps and Markers, and Historic District street name signs.
