Regarding 282 Hudson Avenue. The house at 282 Hudson Avenue was built in 1870 for Russel Crego, a general agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Albany.

By 1868, the firm of Russel Crego & Son was operating at 564 Broadway, opposite the Delavan House, as general agents for Singer sewing machines. An Albany city directory from that year lists the firm at the same address and identifies Oscar M. Crego as part of the business. An 1870–71 business directory continued to list Russel Crego & Son at 564 Broadway as agents for Singer sewing machines.

letter from Russel Crego & Son indicates the scale of the operation. The firm’s printed letterhead identifies the Albany office as Singer’s general agent for a broad regional territory, including the counties of Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Delaware, Schenectady, and more. In the letter itself, Crego urgently requests additional sewing machines from the Singer Manufacturing Company because the firm had outstanding orders, had sold through much of its stock, and was also trying to supply its own agents. The Hudson Avenue house was built the year after this letter was written.
