1. Family Life in Bulltown Marker
Because farming was the major economic activity in the region, social life tended to be organized around the physical site and the requirements and activities of the farmespecially before paved roads were introducedand to involve those neighbors who could help with the planting, harvesting, threshing, molasses making, and other farm work. Work and play therefore tended to mix easily.
Like families in most rural areas, the typical Bulltown family of the early twentieth century was a closely knit unit, each member playing an important role in its daily life. Children learned their responsibilities largely by watching and helping their parents and older sisters and brothers.
Parties, dances, and fox hunts were popular pastimes, and when the roads were finally paved in the 1930's it became far easier for people to travel in search of recreation. Nearby Falls Mill became a local center for baseball, swimming, radio shows, and a variety of fraternal organizations. The schools, too, served as social centers, where parents and children gathered for "spelling bees," "literarys," and "box socials."
