1. In Memory of Thomas Douglas Selkirk Marker

Inscription. The 5th Earl of Selkirk, philanthropist and colonizer, who believing that the hardships of the Scottish Highland peasantry could be alleviated only by emigration, came to Canada in 1803 and established a large settlement in this area.

He was born June 20, 1771 at St. Mary's Isle, Kirkeudbrightshire, Scotland, and died at Pau, France, April 8, 1820. He was the 7th and youngest son of Dunbar Douglas, and upon the death of his father in 1799. He succeeded to the Scottish Earldom of Selkirk, all his brothers having died previously.

Sir Walter Scott, said of him, "I never knew in my life, a man of more generous distinction". Placed here by the descendents, on the 175th anniversary August 7, 1978 .
