1. 1968 1969 Marker
Inscription. On the Vietnamese New Year of 1968, North Vietnam attacked 100 towns and cities in South Vietnam and for a time occupied portions of the U.S.
Embassy. Though eventually repulsed, this show of North Vietnamese
force, together with more than 24,000 American casualties by the end of
1969, led to increased protest in the U.S. Faced with the loss of
support for his advocacy of the war, President Lyndon Johnson did not
seek re-election. His successor, President Richard Nixon, began the
gradual withdrawal of ground forces but increased the air war and
extended it to Cambodia.
As usual, there was good news and bad. A Creswell man died in the North Korean capture of the U.S.S. Pueblo. At home, voters rejected budgets for 100 school districts. In Lakeview the students undertook a wise countermeasure. On the opening of their new Teen Center, they invited the whole town to a get acquainted dance. In Enterprise, too, the students showed their worth. One high school graduate went off to West Point, another was chosen Ideal Girl at Oregon State University. chosen best in the state. And at North Bend, across the bay, the school superintendent retired after 43 years of teaching and could boast that he had never missed a day.
There were two more 43 year celebrations. In Turner, the postmistress
retired from 43 years of service while in Jefferson they gave a gold
medal to the school bus driver who in all those years had never had an
accident. Jefferson also made news in another area. Armstrong, the
towns champion frog leapt 14 feet and 3 inches to win the crown in the
frog jumping contest at the towns Mint Festival. The Albany Jaycees
erected a permanent memorial listing those from Linn County who lost
their lives during twentieth century wars.
As usual, there were many efforts of civic improvement around the state.
Toledo, for example, passed an ordinance forbidding the eyesore of
junked cars. Coquille purchased an ambulance after years of depending on
the local mortuarys hearse for service. Coquille also had some foreign
exposure. Japans champion high school wrestling team arrived for
matches with the local boys and stayed at their opponents houses, and a

man brought back to town his adopted Vietnamese daughter.
The bad news in Coquille was the flood of 69, during which a man trying
to rescue stranded cattle was drowned. A Lakeview man at the Joseph
Rodeo was thrown from his horse and killed. In one coastal community a
young man shot the town policeman and then himself. But there were many
happy occasions in these years, all those annual events which so many
places have: Amitys pancake breakfast, Redmonds Potato Festival, the
Pendleton Round-Up, and now beyond its hundredth year, the Oregon State
Fair.
