Wastewater Treatment Centre
⎯⎯⎯
Centre de traitement des eaux usées
The original treatment facility was built on this site in 1972 by the Town of Summerside. This facility had only a primary level of treatment. In 2008 the City completed the upgrade of the facility to this tertiary treatment plant. This facility uses a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) system to treat the wastewater. This process is an advanced level of treatment which removes unwanted nutrients such as ammonia, phosphorus and nitrogen from the incoming wastewater. Using this process reduces the environmental impact and helps protect the balance of the ecosystem; without this filtration process the bacteria that is not removed from the wastewater will be pumped out into the harbour creating a large scare outgrow of algae resulting in the death of ocean wildlife.
