1. Lieutenant Colonel Cyrus Wesley Peck, VC, DSO & Bar Marker
For the most conspicuous bravery and skillful leadership when in attack under incense artillery, rifle, and machine-gun fire, Colonel Peck was awarded the Victoria Cross.
In September 1918 at Villiers les Cagnicourt, France (The Drocourt-Queant Line) Colonel Peck was the Commanding Officer of the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) CEF. His troops, after capturing their first objective were under severe counter attack. The situation, being critical in the extreme, Colonel Peck made a personal forward reconnaissance under heavy gun fire, directing tank support thus enabling the battalion to advance and achieve its objective.
A Prince Rupert pioneer, Cy Peck's leadership, skills and drive were manifest before, during and after World War One. He was a respected community leader, successful in the fishing industry and other commercial ventures. In 1917, while serving in France Colonel Peck was elected Member of Parliament for Skeena. In 1924, he was elected a member of B.C.'s Legislative Assembly for Saanich and Gulf Islands, later resigning to become a member of the Canadian Pension Commission.
