Koeling is noodzakelijk voor het goedhouden van voedsel en voor bepaalde industriële processen. In ijskelders werd daarom 's winters natuurijs opgeslagen voor gebruik in de zomer. Vanaf ongeveer 1860 kwamen technieken om kunstmatig ijs te fabriceren in ontwikkeling en in 1911 kreeg Gouda haar eigen ijsfabriek. Het fabrieksijs werd op zijn beurt overbodig door het steeds goedkoper worden van koeltechnieken. Karakteristiek aan dit vroegindustriële gebouw zijn het platte dak, de uitgemetselde penanten, het fries. de rondbogen en de bekroningen in art decostijl.
Willem Barendsz Ice Factory
Cooling is necessary for preserving food and for certain industrial processes. Therefore, natural ice was stored in ice cellars during the winter for use in the summer. From around 1860, techniques for manufacturing artificial ice began to develop, and in 1911, Gouda acquired its own ice factory.
