1. Greater Moore’s Chapel Marker
The Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the oldest churches in Allen. The building is at the northwest corner of Cedar Drive and St. Mary Drive. The Allen Colored School met in the building in the early years and in the 1930’s the building was sold to the Allen Independent School District for $150. The school district agreed the Allen AME Church could still use the building as long as they desired and it is still in use today.
In 1953, Elder Hubert Moore started the ‘Moore’s Chapel, Church of God in Christ’ (COGIC) in one of the member’s homes on Coats Drive, a block south of the church. In October 1969, the Allen Black School building was put up for auction. Elder Hubert Moore represented the church and bid $1,650.00 on the property. The church won the bid and signed the papers on October 15, 1969. Payments were made at $50.00 per month. The church kept the name ‘Moore’s Chapel.’ The property was paid off October 10, 1972.
At the demise of Elder Hubert Moore in 1983, assistant pastor, Minister C.L. Moore was appointed pastor by Bishop J.N. Haynes. At the demise of Elder C.L. Moore on February 22, 1994,
