Op deze plaats stond tot 1573 de Latijnse school en daarna het zogenaamde Boterhuis. Tussen 1853-1855 werd de oude bebouwing vervangen door het huidige pand. Het werd ontworpen door W.C. van Goor in de eclectische stijl en kreeg een dubbelfunctie met kantongerecht, tekenschool en van 1874-1947 Stedelijk Museum. Deze combinatie verklaart het motto 'voor kunst en wet'.

(The Latin school stood on this site until 1573, followed by the so-called Boterhuis. Between 1853 and 1855, the old buildings were replaced by the current structure. It was designed by W.C. van Goor in the eclectic style and served a dual function as a district court, drawing school, and, from 1874 to 1947, the Municipal Museum. This combination explains the motto 'for art and law'.)
