Calvert Hall
Rededicated June 13, 1992
Teer Hall is one of the last remaining buildings which were part of the original campus of what is now the Corsicana State Home. It originally served as the dining facility for the school and as student housing. The building fell into some disrepair and was used for general storage until funds were appropriated by the Seventieth Legislature to restore portions of the building to a dining facility and meeting rooms. The Seventy Second Legislature appropriated funds to complete the renovations returning the remainder of the building into housing for visiting families.
Upon completion of the initial phase of renovation the building was dedicated as Calvert Hall in honor of the Honorable Robert Wilburn Calvert.
Robert Wilburn Calvert was born in Tennessee on February 22, 1905, and was placed in the Corsicana State Home when he moved to Texas in 1913. Following graduation from the State Home High School in 1923 he enrolled in the University of Texas receiving his degree from the University of Texas Law School in 1931. Robert Calvert was elected to the first of three terms in the Texas Legislature in 1933 and was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1937.
Robert Calvert continued his elected career by being elected County Attorney of Hill County in 1948 and was first elected as a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court in 1950. He served two terms as an Associate Justice prior to being elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1960. Judge Calvert served as Chief Justice until his retirement from public service in 1972.
