Hotbed of Culture and Art
Victoria-by-the-Sea, located on the province's south shore, is very proud of its reputation as an arts and culture hub. Founded in 1819, the village really came into its own by the late 1800s, with three wharves and many thriving businesses. Despite its small stature, Victoria punched above its weight when it came to international trade. Various produce, including potatoes, cattle, grain and eggs, were shipped by schooner from the village to ports in Europe, the West Indies and other east coast locations. Today, a wide variety of artisans create and sell their works from their homes in the village. Chocolates, candles, woven pieces, paintings, and home goods are available hot off the press, so to speak. Unique accommodations and a smattering of restaurants, cafes and take-outs add to the charms of this picture-perfect village. From the two restaurants located right on the wharf, you can watch lobster fishermen landing their catch - some of which will likely make it into delicious lobster rolls before the day is out.
