1. Chicken Coop Marker
A chicken coop is a house for chickens that keeps them safe from the elements and from predators. During the winter it protects them from the cold and during the summer it provides lots of shade and water. It usually faces south to receive sunlight throughout the day. The coop contains nesting boxes for laying eggs, roosts or perches for sleeping and can be completely closed to protect the chickens or other fowl from predators like coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, hawks, and owls. Most coops have two doors, a main door with ramp for chickens to get in and out, and a door granting access to gather the eggs.
With rural lifestyles, it was common to have a few chickens to produce enough eggs for the family. Eating eggs became popular in the 1920s. Extra eggs may have gone to a local farmers market for neighbors to buy. Hens were slaughtered once they could no longer produce eggs.
Small farm flocks were the norm until World War II when the government started rationing red meat and there was a push to eat chicken, making it a popular protein option for many people. The transition from small farm flocks to large commercial operations did not reach the Midwest until the 1950s.
This chicken coop was constructed in 2017 as a service project of the Young Mens Service League of Allen.
