1. Allen Christian Church Marker
Allen Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was built in 1918 at the northwest corner of Main Street and Allen Drive and is a superb example of prairie style architecture. Beautiful stained glass windows are exquisite features of this church. The names of John Liter and Mary Brown, John William Brown, Thomas and Parthenia Ereckson, Mrs. Leslie Walker Bush, James and Nettie Bush, and Sterling and Janie Bush adorn the windows. A mystery lies in the Good Shepherd window where Jesus has six toes.
Church records indicate that the Allen Christian Church was organized in 1880 and purchased two lots from the H&TC Railway. Initially meeting at Allen's school, J. Ben Faulkner served as the first minister.
In 1881, services were held in the afternoon at the Baptist Church after that congregation concluded their morning services and lunch. Baptisms were held in Rowlett Creek at the Indian Hole, near where SH 5 crosses Rowlett Creek today. Thomas J. Ereckson and Owen Mathews were among the first elders and W. L. Franklin and John Liter Brown were deacons.
In 1887, the first building was constructed, and the Bush Brush Arbor was the open air tabernacle located adjacent to the original structure. It served as an alternative worship location during the torrid summer months and a focus for revival meetings for all faiths. In 1918, those buildings were replaced with this structure.
