1. Tenant House Marker
After the Civil War it was common for larger landowners to have tenant farmers work part of their land on a share system. A house and farm land was provided to the tenant in exchange for work done in the production of crops. This small house is typical of a tenant house. It has just the basics two small rooms, one for preparing and eating food, the other for resting and sleeping. Furnishings were very sparse. There were often open shelves and hooks for hanging clothing. There was usually no water or heat, but there might have been a small stove. There was no bathroom inside but an outhouse would have been available. Electricity, gas and water were probably added later. A small front porch provided some relief from the hot summer weather.
This house is a replica of a tenant house that was built around 1950 on the property of Allen farmer and businessman Oscar Lynge. He built the house for long-time employee Gutherie Gus Davis who lived in the house until just before his death in 1980. The original house was moved to the Heritage Village in 2003 but was considered too damaged to restore and was demolished.
