Deployment is the movement of service members - individually or as a unit - and materials and supplies from one's home station to a designated overseas location (also known as a "theater of operation") or within the United States at which one performs their respective military duties to support the intended mission. A typical deployment varies from branch to branch and the specific mission, but on average lasts between 6 and 12 months. Separation resulting from deployment can be challenging for the service member as well as loved ones left behind. Each military branch, many non-profit organizations and often communities provide assistance and support to the families of deployed service members.
