G. Van Arkel en A.W. Weissman, de architecten die aan het eind van de 19de eeuw als eersten de monumenten in Noord-Holland inventariseerden, noemden deze gevel uit 1617 de mooiste renaissancegevel in heel Holland. De steen met het onderschrift 'Hollandia' stelt 'de Leeuw in de Hollandse Tuin' voor. De steen met het onderschrift 'Daar was Jacobs waterput' verwijst naar het Bijbelse tafereel van Jezus en de Samaritaanse vrouw.

(G. Van Arkel and A.W. Weissman, the architects who were the first to inventory the monuments in North Holland at the end of the 19th century, called this facade from 1617 the most beautiful Renaissance facade in all of Holland. The stone with the inscription 'Hollandia' represents 'The Lion in the Dutch Garden'. The stone with the inscription 'There was Jacob's well' refers to the biblical scene of Jesus and the Samaritan woman.)
