The town was first known as Pond Run, then Chinns Crossing, incorporated as Chinnville in 1915 and the name changed to Raceland in 1925.

Excerpt: Raceland is a Greenup county city about five miles southeast of Greenup. The name comes from a race track that operated in the area from 1924 to 1927. Various names have been used for the area, including Chinnville, for a local family, and Raceland Junction, for the station on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. A Pond Run post office operated from 1848 to 1851. The Chinnville post office opened in 1910, was renamed Raceland in 1925, was renamed Chinnville about 1927, was again renamed Raceland in 1930, and closed in 1958.

2. The Town Was First Known as Pond Run Marker

The marker is mounted on a utility pole beside the sidewalk.

Excerpt: The city of Raceland and the land surrounding it were part of a 5,000-acre Revolutionary War grant to Abraham Buford. His son, Charles Buford, divided up the land and sold it in tracts. Eventually, one of the tracts was bequeathed to Benjamen Chinn, who sold his tract in town lots. He gave the town the name “Chinnville”. Its first post office was established on March 7, 1910. It became an incorporated city on July 31, 1915.
In 1924, Jack O. Keene (who later established Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky), opened Raceland Race Course near the city. Due to this, the town was renamed Raceland on April 1, 1925. The racetrack was eventually abandoned and the city was once again named Chinnville, but on April 1, 1930, the city was again named Raceland.
