1. 200 Years of Worship and Service Marker
To the Glory of God and the memory of all those who have contributed to the teaching of His Word and the futherance of His Work, this plaque has been dedicated by the Rt. Rev. Walter Farquharson, Moderator of the United Church of Canada, to mark the 200th anniversary of the first Methodist church services in Tryon.
In May of 1792, the Rev. William Grandin came to Prince Edward Island from Saint John, N.B. and became the first Methodist to preach in the western part of the Island when he held services at a site near the present church in Tryon. His sermons so moved his listeners that a congregation was established which remains active in God's service after 200 years.
The earliest services in Tryon were held in the home of Nathaniel Wright, who served as the lay preacher for the local Wesleyan Methodist society. In 1817 a small chapel was built at the present location on land leased from John Lord. A larger structure was erected in 1839 and this was in turn replaced by the present church, designed by William Critchlow Harris, in 1882.
