1. Metcalfe Courthouse Marker

Inscription.
Metcalfe, a lumber-and-agriculture based community located eight miles to the southeast of Thomasville, was founded as a railroad boomtown in 1889. Metcalfe expanded around the railroad depot and by 1892 it requested that the County build a courthouse for magisterial purposes. Despite the fact that the Courthouse was rarely or never used for court and Metcalfe lost its governing charter by the early 1920s, the building was used as a meeting place for the residents of Metcalfe and was the voting location for every election until 2002.

In 2003, the courthouse was in severe disrepair and was put up for auction by the County. The Historical Society won the bid, and the building was moved to Museum grounds in 2004. It came with its contents, including benches, voting signs, and materials.

Excerpt: Metcalfe is a small village in southwestern Georgia. The lumberyard closed in 2023 and is located on the main highway. The name of the village is commonly and erroneously spelled without the final “e.” The correct spelling is “Metcalfe,” reflecting the fact that it was named in honor of John Thomas Metcalfe, M.D. This town was also featured in Alfred Hitchcock's film Strangers on a Train.
