Kitchen gardens and yards also served as extended workspaces for chores. Housework in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was hard physical labor. Chores like laundry and beating rugs required plenty of space. Wells and water pumps were commonplace before the introduction of plumbing inside the house. A well-worn path often led to the family privy or outhouse near the rear of the family's plot of land. A fence to keep animals out, rather than in, often encircled homes and gardens and were built of materials ranging from simple wooden pickets to more elaborate cast iron fencing in wealthier neighborhoods. The family trash pit became the resting place for food, yard, and household waste.
