1. Display Garden Marker
Gardening and cultivating plants for their appearance and scent became a popular pastime for members of all classes in the mid-nineteenth century. Home gardeners favored blooms for their colors and scents and experimented with creating their own custom hybrids. Display gardens, or ornamental gardens, were planted for their visual appeal and were often a mix of native plants and exotic or new variations that were ordered from seed catalogs. At the turn of the century, the fashion of a swept yard, meaning no grass, was less favored than a lawn of grass. As you move further into the twentieth century, foundation plantings close to the house grew in popularity and large beds of perennials that would reappear each year became more popular.
