Scottsbluff in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Settling the North Platte Valley/Colonizando el valle North Platte
Inscription.
As emigrants followed the trails along the Platte River in the 1840s and 1850s, many recognized the area's prime grazing land. However, it was not until the Homestead Act of 1862 that pioneers could claim land here. Many Civil War veterans received 160-acre homestead grants for their service, and some settled here in the Platte River Valley in the late 1860s.
Ranching took advantage of this valley's bountiful grasslands until the early 1900s when dams, levees, and irrigation canals allowed farming to replace ranching as the valley's primary use. Early settlers built houses made of sod because wagon trains had used most of the area's wood; later houses were constructed with wood and brick. Eventually the valley had two incorporated cities — Gering in 1887, and Scottsbluff in 1900.

Excerpt: The Homestead Act of 1862, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, granted Americans 160-acre plots of public land for the price a small filing fee. The Civil War-era act, considered one of the United States’ most important pieces of legislation, led to Western expansion and allowed citizens of all walks of life—including the formerly enslaved, women and immigrants—to become landowners.(Submitted on September 15, 2026, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
