1. Stuttgarter Rundbunker / Stuttgart Round Bunker Marker
These round bunkers were installed in Stuttgart’s suburbs beginning in early 1944. Each bunker could hold eight people. To conserve materials, the concrete walls were only seven centimeters thick. The bunker was designed by senior building official Fritz Baumann. A wooden wall and the hollow space behind it helped absorb the force of explosions. About 540 bunkers were planned for Stuttgart, but only about 240 were built. Each bunker was completely buried in the ground, and its entrance from above could be closed with concrete covers. The bunker design was submitted for a patent.
