Dies ist eine Abdeckung für Ausstiege aus Kellern und Gängen, die als Luftschutzräume genutzt wurden. Die Firma Mannesmann aus Düsseldorf, bekannt als Röhrenhersteller, produzierte dieses Gitter im Werk Berlin (Mannesmann Stahlblechbau). Die Abdeckung besteht aus zwei Teilen: dem Gitterteil mit der geprägten Aufschrift und einem darunter liegenden Abdeckblech, der sogenannten „Glocke“, mit dem man den Ausstieg luftdicht abschließen konnte. Der geprägte obere Teil diente Rettungskräften dazu, Luftschutzausstiege schnell ausfindig zu machen. Um auch Ausstiege zu finden, die mit Trümmerschutt überdeckt waren, befanden sich an den Hauswänden fluoreszierend aufgemalte Pfeile, zum Teil mit Ergänzungen wie LSA (Luftschutzausstieg) oder LSR (Luftschutzraum).

(English Translation)
This is a cover for exits from cellars and passageways that were used as air-raid shelters. Mannesmann of Düsseldorf, a company known for manufacturing pipes, produced this grating at its Berlin factory, Mannesmann Stahlblechbau. The cover has two parts: an upper grating with an embossed inscription and a metal cover underneath known as the “bell,” which could seal the exit airtight. The embossed upper section helped rescue workers quickly locate shelter exits. Fluorescent arrows were also painted on building walls so exits covered by rubble could be found. Some arrows included abbreviations such as LSA for air-raid shelter exit or LSR for air-raid shelter.
